Biography[]
Endicott Howard Peabody was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts in 1920, a descendant of John Endecott. He served in the US Navy in the Pacific theater of World War II before becoming a lawyer in 1948 and embarking on an initially unsuccessful political career as a Democrat. However, he served on the Governor's Council from 1955 to 1957 and became an ally of John F. Kennedy, and he was narrowly elected Governor in an upset in 1962. He staunchly opposed the death penalty and refused to implement it, and he also established the University of Massachusetts Boston in 1964. He was defeated for renomination and in his other political aspirations, and he moved to Hollis, New Hampshire in 1983 and continued to be a perennial candidate. He died in 1997.
