Emma of Normandy (984-6 March 1052) was the wife of King Aethelred the Unready of England and King Canute of Denmark, Norway, and England and the daughter of Richard I of Normandy.
Biography[]
Emma of Norway was born in 984, the daughter of Duke Richard I of Normandy and Gunnora. She married King Aethelred the Unready of England in 1002, and Aethelred gave her several properties. They would have two sons, the future king Edward the Confessor and his brother Alfred Aetheling, as well as Goda of England, who would marry Eustace II of Boulogne. In 1016, Aethelred died, and she remarried to the viking king Canute. Her children were Harthacnut and Gunhilda of Denmark. Emma helped in keeping her sons Harthacnut and Edward the Confessor on friendly terms with each other, and she died in 1052.
