Emma of Italy (948-12 October 988) was Queen consort of West Francia with Lothair of France from 965 to 986.
Biography[]
Emma was born in 948, the only child of Lothaire II of Italy and Adelaide of Italy. Her father was poisoned in 950 by Berengar of Ivrea, his main rival, and in 965 she was married to King Lothair of France; Emma's mother remarried to Otto the Great, and her half-brother would be Otto II of Germany. Emma's half-brother and husband would fight each other from 978 to 980, and Emma was on the sidelines. When her son Louis V of France died in 987, she retired to a convent in Burgundy and died there on 12 October 988.
