The Emirate of Bukhara was a Central Asian state that existed from 1785 to 1920, with Bukhara serving as its capital. The emirate succeeded the Khanate of Bukhara, with the Manghud dynasty creating a new state upon rising to power in the aftermath of the disintegration of Nadir Shah's Persian empire. Starting in 1842, the Russian Empire began to conquer the emirate, and Russia annexed much of the emirate's territory in 1868, including the important of Samarkand. In 1873, the rest of the emirate became a Russian protectorate. During the Russian Revolution, the reformists in the emirate called on the Bolshevik revolutionaries for assistance in overthrowing the conservative emir, and the Red Army successfully assaulted Bukhara in September 1920. The Bukharan People's Soviet Republic was created in the emirate's stead.
