Emir Hasan of Addauid Emirate (733-14 March 769) was the Emir of the Addauid Emirate in Cilicia and Cappadocia in southeastern Turkey in 769, preceding Emir Abd al-Kadir of Addauid Emirate. He was killed in battle with the Byzantine Empire at the Battle of Tzamandos.
Biography[]
Hasan was born in 733 to a family Sunni Muslim Levantines, and he was the first Emir of the Addauid Emirate of southeastern Turkey. His emirate corresponded to the regions of Cilicia and Cappadocia, also including Hatay Province on the Levant coast in Syria. Hasan ruled an independent emirate from the Abbasid Caliphate, and he had to deal with both the hostile Byzantine Empire in Asia Minor and the ambitious caliph al-Mansur in the Middle East. In 769 AD, Emperor Constantine V of Byzantium began a campaign to reconquer lost lands in Asia Minor from the Saracens, and he invaded the Addauid Emirate, which was the nearest threat. On 14 March 769, his larger army came upon a smaller Byzantine army at Tzamandos, and the ensuing Battle of Tzamandos saw Hassan's large army trounce the Byzantines. However, he was cornered and killed in the process, unluckily among the 40 losses of the 1,722-strong Addauid army. His son Emir Abd al-Kadir of Addauid Emirate succeeded him, only to be slain next January.
