Emilio Bandiera

Emilio Bandiera (20 June 1819-25 July 1844) was an Italian patriot who, along with his older brother Attilio Bandiera, led a failed republican insurrection in Calabria in 1844.

Biography[]

Emilio Bandiera was born in Split, Austrian Empire in 1819, the son of an Austrian admiral. He and his older brother Attilio Bandiera both followed their father in pursuing naval careers, and they founded the secretive Esperia society as a republican movement affiliated with Giuseppe Mazzini's nationalist movement. After a failed uprising in southern Italy, the brothers fled to Corfu in Greece, and they deserted the Austrian navy. In 1844, upon hearing of a rebellion in Bologna, they travelled to Calabria and attempted to stir up an uprising against Bourbon rule. However, they were arrested by the police before they could carry out their revolt, and they were executed by firing squad on 25 July 1844.
