Emery John San Souci (24 July 1857-10 August 1936) was the Republican Governor of Rhode Island from 4 January 1921 to 2 January 1923, succeeding Robert Livingston Beeckman and preceding William S. Flynn.
Biography[]
Emery John San Souci was born in Saco, Maine in 1857, and he was raised in St. Albans, Vermont. He worked as a clerk in Biddeford, Maine; Greenfield, Massachusetts; and Providence, Rhode Island before opening a shoe and clothing store business in Providence. He served on the city council from 1900 to 1907, as aide-de-camp to Governor Aram J. Pothier from 1908 to 1914, as Lieutenant Governor from 1915 to 1921, and as Governor from 1921 to 1923. He lost re-election due to his unpopular handling of a textile strike, having sent in the state militia to crush the strikers. He served as Collector of the Port of Providence from 1923 to 1935, and he died in 1936.
