Elliott Harris Levitas (26 December 1930-16 December 2022) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-GA 4) from 3 January 1975 to 3 January 1985, succeeding Benjamin B. Blackburn and preceding Pat Swindall.
Biography[]
Elliott Harris Levitas was born to a Jewish family in Atlanta, Georgia in 1930. He became a lawyer in 1955 and served in the US Air Force from 1955 to 1958, and he served as a delegate to the 1964 Democratic National Convention. He served in the State House from 1965 to 1975, and, when the results of the 1966 gubernatorial race were disputed, he voted for Republican Bo Callaway rather than aid the segregationist Lester Maddox, who ultimately won. Levitas served in the US House of Representatives from 1975 to 1985, when he lost re-election, and he died in 2022.
