Ellette of Colchester

Ellette of Colchester (born 830) was a 9th-century East Saxon noblewoman from Colchester, Essex. She styled herself a professional flyter, and she often condescended towards her opponents, accusing them of being peasants. In 875 AD, during the Lammas festival in Colchester, she - with the help of herald Alward Bender - challenged the Norwegian Viking warrior Eivor to a flyting competition, but Eivor bested her despite her classist insults, forcing her to pay him 200 silver coins.
