Elizabeth the Queen Mother (4 August 1900 – 30 March 2002) was Queen consort of the United Kingdom from 11 December 1936 to 6 February 1952 as the wife of King George VI of Britain. She was the mother of Queen Elizabeth II of Britain, and she was the matriarch of the British royal family untilh er death at the age of 101.

Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon was born in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, England on 4 August 1900, the daughter of the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne and Cecilia Cavendish-Bentinck. Bowes-Lyon came from a family of British nobility, and she came to prominence in 1923 when she married the Duke of York, the second son of King George V of Britain and Queen Mary of Teck. Elizabeth became Queen consort in 1936 when her husband succeeded his brother Edward VIII of Britain as monarch following his abdication, and she was known for beeing cheerful and having an indomitable spirit. During World War II, King George and Queen Elizabeth provided moral support to the British public, even as German Luftwaffe planes bombed the United Kingdom during The Blitz. German fuehrer Adolf Hitler claimed that she was the most dangerous woman in Europe due to her role in keeping the British fighting spirit high. She was widowed at the age of 51 when her husband died in 1952, and she became the matriarch of the British royal family when Mary of Teck died in 1953. She was consistently popular among the British public even as her family's reputation was repeatedly tarnished, and she had an active public life until a few weeks before her death at the age of 101 on 30 March 2002.
