Elizabeth de Burgh (1284-27 October 1327) was the second wife and only queen consort of Robert the Bruce, reigning as Queen consort of Scotland from 1306 to 1327.
Biography[]
Elizabeth de Burgh was born in County Down, Ireland in 1284, the daughter of Richard Og de Burgh, 2nd Earl of Ulster. She met Robert the Bruce at the English court, and they married in 1302. In 1306, they were crowned King and Queen of Scotland at Scone, but she predicted that the Scots would be defeated by England, and Elizabeth and the rest of Bruce's family were sent to Kildrummy Castle under the protection of Robert's brother Nigel de Brus following the Battle of Methven. However, the English took the castle and had Nigel hanged, drawn, and quartered, while Elizabeth was held under house arrest in England. She was imprisoned until 1314, when she was released in a prisoner exchange after the Battle of Bannockburn. She died in Cullen, Banffshire in 1327.
