Biography[]

Elizabeth Stuart was born in London, England on 28 December 1635, the daughter of King Charles I of England and Queen Henrietta Maria of France. When the English Civil War broke out in 1642, she and her younger brother Henry Stuart, Duke of Gloucester were placed under the care of Parliament, and she was tutored in Hebrew, Greek, Italian, Latin, and French. On 29 January 1649, Elizabeth and Henry visited their father on the eve of his execution, and Charles bade Henry not to accept the throne if offered it by Parliament, while he gave Elizabeth a Bible. When the Third English Civil War broke out, Elizabeth was moved to the Isle of Wight to prevent her from supporting her brother, Charles II of England, in claiming the throne, and she died of pneumonia at the age of 14.
