Elisha Dyer (20 July 1811-17 May 1890) was the Republican Governor of Rhode Island from 26 May 1857 to 31 May 1859, succeeding William W. Hoppin and preceding Thomas G. Turner.
Biography[]
Elisha Dyer was born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1811, and he graduated from Brown University at the age of 18 and was active with the Whigs before joining the Republican Party. He served as Adjutant General of Rhode Island from 1840 to 1845, on the Providence School Committee for over a decade, as Governor from 1857 to 1859, as a Union Army captain during the American Civil War, and as a bank president and cemetery director until his death in 1890.
