Eliot Arkwright (born 1750) was one of the Continental Navy's three original captains.
Biography[]
Eliot Arkwright was born in Newport, Rhode Island, and served in the Royal Navy from the age of thirteen. He was never a captain, and was a Midshipman aboard HMS Eagle, but he was made commander of USS Champion in 1775 when the Continental Navy was formed at the start of the American Revolutionary War. He moved to Providence and headed aboard the ship, which was merged with John Paul Jones and Abner Basset's ships as a fleet.
