Elephant and Castle

Elephant and Castle is a neighborhood in the London Borough of Southwark, located within the greater Walworth and Newington neighborhoods. The neighborhood was named for a coaching inn located at the major crossroad, and the area was urbanized after the construction of the Westminster Bridge in 1751. The railway arrived in 1863 and the first deep-level tube line in 1890, and the area became a thriving shopping area, becoming known as "the Piccadilly of South London". On 10 May 1941, raging fires broke out in Elephant and Castle as a result of The Blitz during World War II. The neighborhood was rebuilt during the 1960s, and the neighborhood became home to the London College of Communication and experienced regeneration during the 21st century. In addition, Elephant and Castle became home to a prominent Latin American community, which inhabited both Elephant and Castle and Stockwell.
