Elena Petrushenko (1942-) was President of Russia from 2004, succeeding Yury Tarasov.
Biography[]
Elena Petrushenko was born in Kursk, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union in 1942, and she worked as a mechanical engineer before entering politics during the 1990s as a United Russia member. She was first elected to the State Duma in 2000, and, in 2004, she was chosen as her party's presidential nominee. She defeated CPRF candidate Oksana Zebedev in a landslide of 55.2% to 44.8%.
