Elbert Nostrand Carvel (9 February 1910-6 February 2005) was the Democratic Governor of Delaware from 18 January 1949 to 20 January 1953 (succeeding Walter W. Bacon and preceding J. Caleb Boggs) and from 17 January 1961 to 19 January 1965 (succeeding David P. Buckson and preceding Charles L. Terry Jr.).
Biography[]
Elbert Nostrand Carvel was born in Shelter Island, New York in 1910, and he moved to Laurel, Delaware in 1936. He managed a fertilizer company before serving as Lieutenant Governor from 1945 to 1949 and as Governor from 1949 to 1953 and from 1961 to 1965, and he opposed capital punishment and supported Black civil rights. He died in 2005.
