Elam was a pre-Iranic civilization which existed from 2700 to 539 BC, with Susa serving as its capital. The Elamites inhabited the Iranian plateau before moving to the Khuzestan lowlands, and they survived numerous invaders, including the Akkadian Empire, Babylonia, and the Assyrian Empire. In 540 BC, the Achaemenid Persians conquered Susa, and Elam became a part of the Persian Empire. The Elamites became the ancestors of the Lurs.
