Biography[]

Ekrem Imamoglu was born in Akcaabat, Turkey in 1970, and he worked in his family's construction business and in the soccer industry before becoming head of the CHP's youth wing in 2009. From 2014 to 2019, he served as mayor of the Belikduzu district of Istanbul, and, in 2019, he narrowly defeated AKP candidate Binali Yildrim to become Mayor of Istanbul in a major upset. However, Recep Tayyip Erdogan's AKP government annulled the results on 6 May 2019, claiming that some of the votes were invalid, and it decided to hold another election in June, meanwhile removing Imamoglu from office.
