Ekkehard Guhr was a German Waffen-SS veteran and Protestant minister who served in the 2nd SS Panzer Division Das Reich during World War II. Guhr had been raised in an anti-communist household, with his father saying that Germany would be doomed if the KPD came into power. At the age of 17, he joined the SS to defy his parents, who refused to allow his relationship with a young Catholic girl. In his old age, he concluded that "the deeply destructive nature of national socialism was masked at the time by the success it had."
