The Eighth United States Army (EUSA) is an American field army that was activated on 10 January 1944 during World War II. Robert L. Eichelberger commanded the army during no less than sixty amphibious operations in the southwest Pacific, fighting in New Guinea from September to December 1944 before being sent to Leyte in the Philippines. The army spent the rest of the war clearing out Japanese troops on the island of Mindanao, and it was sent to Tokyo, Japan for occupation duties after the war's end in 1945. In 1948, Walton Walker took command of the army, and he led it into the Korean War in 1950. In December 1950, Matthew Ridgway took command of the army after Walker died in a jeep crash, and he restored the battered army to its combat effectiveness. The army took part in the war of attrition from 1951 to 1953, and it remained stationed in South Korea even after the war's end. In 2017, its headquarters was Yongsan, South Korea.
