
Egbert Benson (21 June 1746 – 24 August 1833) was a member of the US House of Representatives (F-NY 3) from 4 March 1789 to 3 March 1793 (preceding Philip Van Cortlandt) and from NY 2 from 4 March to 2 August 1813 (succeeding William Paulding, Jr. and preceding William Irving.
Biography[]
Egbert Benson was born in New York City, New York in 1746 to an old Dutch family, and he joined the Sons of Liberty in Dutchess County and served as a member of the State Assembly from 1777 to 1781 and in the Continental Congress from 1784 to 1788. From 1789 to 1793, he served as a Federalist member of the US House of Representatives, and he served as a New York Supreme Court judge from 1794 to 1801. From 1804 to 1816, Benson served as President of the New York Historical Society, and he briefly served in the House again in 1813 before resigning after a few months. He died in 1833.
