
Edward Stopford (28 September 1766-14 September 1837) was a general of the United Kingdom during the Napoleonic Wars.
Biography[]
Edward Stopford was born in County Wexford, Ireland on 28 September 1766, the son of James Stopford and Mary Powys and the older brother of Admiral Robert Stopford. He served in the British Army and rose to the rank of Lieutenant-General, leading a brigade at Bussaco, Fuentes de Onoro, Vittoria, San Sebastian, the Nive, Nivelle, and Bayonne from 1810 to 1814; he commanded the "left corps" of Viscount Wellington's army during the storming of Bayonne at the end of the Peninsular War. From 1810 to 1818, he served as a member of Parliament for Marlborough, and he died in 1837 at the age of 70, a lifelong bachelor.
