Edward Shippen

Edward Shippen (1639-2 October 1712) was Mayor of Philadelphia from 25 October 1701 to 5 October 1703, succeeding Humphrey Morrey and preceding Anthony Morris I.

Biography[]

Edward Shippen was born in Methley, West Yorkshire in 1639, and he emigrated to Boston before being whipped for being a Quaker. He was invited by William Penn to move his mercantile business to Philadelphia, and he became Philadelphia's first elected mayor. He died in 1712.
