Edward Kavanagh

Edward Kavanagh (27 April 1795-22 January 1844) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-ME 3) from 4 March 1831 to 3 March 1835 (succeeding Joseph F. Wingate and preceding Jeremiah Bailey) and Governor of Maine from 7 March 1843 to 1 January 1844 (succeeding John Fairfield and preceding David Dunn).

Biography[]

Edward Kavanagh was born in Newcastle, Maine in 1795, the son of Irish Catholic immigrants from County Wexford. He practiced law in Damariscotta before serving in the State House from 1826 to 1828, in the US House of Representatives from 1831 to 1835, as Ambassador to Portugal from 1835 to 1841, in the State Senate from 1842 to 1843, and as Governor of Maine from 1843 until his death in 1844.
