Edward Douglass White Sr.

Edward Douglass White Sr. (3 March 1795-18 April 1847) was a member of the US House of Representatives (W-LA 1) from 4 March 1829 to 15 November 1834 (succeeding Edward Livingston and preceding Henry Johnson) and from 4 March 1839 to 3 March 1843 (succeeding Johnson and preceding John Slidell), and Governor of Louisiana from 4 February 1835 to 4 February 1839 (interrupting Andre B. Roman's terms).

Biography[]

Edward Douglass White Sr. was born in Maury County, Tennessee in 1795, and he became a lawyer in Donaldsonville, Louisiana in 1815. He became a New Orleans municipal judge in 1825, served in the US House of Representatives from 1829 to 1834 and from 1839 to 1843, and as Governor from 1835 to 1839. His son Edward Douglass White Jr. later served on the US Supreme Court.
