Edward Butler (died May 1916) was an Anglo-Irish banker and businessman who lived in Fitzwilliam Square, Dublin during the early 20th century.
Biography[]
Edward Butler was born in Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland to a well-to-do Anglo-Irish banking family. He was raised in the Anglican faith, but he married a Catholic, Dolly Butler, who was the sister of a Catholic priest, Robert Mulcahy. Edward and Dolly had two children, Harry and Elizabeth Butler, and the family lived in a mansion in Fitzwilliam Square. Butler had a strong disliking for Catholic "troublemakers" amid a rise in Irish nationalism in the early 20th century, and he had his daughter marry Stephen Duffy Lyons, a wealthy unionist. He was staunchly opposed to the 1916 Easter Rising, threatening to fire any of his employees who took part in the uprising and disowning his daughter after she was imprisoned for treason. He passed away of natural causes while sitting at his desk in May 1916.
