Eduardo López de Romaña

Eduardo López de Romaña (19 March 1847-26 May 1912) was President of Peru from 8 September 1899 to 8 September 1903, succeeding Nicolas de Pierola and preceding Manuel Candamo.

Biography[]

Eduardo López de Romaña was born in Arequipa, Peru in 1847, the son of a wealthy landowner. Trained as an engineer in London, he helped to build the Punjab Northern State Railway and a rail line in Brazil. He returned to Peru in 1874 and managed a family plantation before becoming a divisional commander in the Peruvian Army during the War of the Pacific. After the war, he became President of the Liberal Club and served as a senator in the 1890s. He was elected President of Peru in 1899, and he oversaw agricultural development and suppressed various coup attempts by Andres Avelino Caceres' supporters. He died in 1912.
