Edmund Butler, Earl of Carrick

Edmund Butler, Earl of Carrick (1268-13 September 1321) was Earl of Carrick in Ireland.

Biography[]

Edmund Butler was the son of Theobald Butler, 4th Chief Butler of Ireland and brother of Theobald Butler, 5th Chief Butler of Ireland. In 1303, he became Justiciar of Ireland, and he was knighted by King Edward II of England in 1309. In 1313, he created 30 knights, and he distinguished himself during the fight against Robert the Bruce and the invading army of Scotland during the 1310s. After his 1317 defeat at the hands of Edward Bruce, he was replaced as Justiciar of Ireland, and he was replaced by Earl Roger of Shrewsbury. He died in 1321, and his son James Butler would later become Earl of Ormond.
