Edgware

Edgware is a suburban town in the London Borough of Barnet, Greater London, England, located 9.5 miles northwest of Charing Cross. Known to the Anglo-Saxons as Eggeswer, meaning "Ecgi's pond", Edgware follows the same line as ancient Watling Street, and the area was mostly forested until the 13th century, and its main industry until the 16th century was mixed agriculture, and then the sale of hay and cattle until the 1790s. During the Industrial Revolution, gravel pits were built in Edgware, and it also produced metal parts for respirator filters during World War II. While the Great Northern Railway arrived in 1867 and a tram service in 1904, Edgware remained a small suburb until the 2000s, when Edgware was designated a major center for preferred development in the London Plan.
