Edgar of Scotland (1074-8 January 1107) was King of Scotland from 1097 to 1107, succeeding Donald III and preceding Alexander I.
Biography[]
Eagar mac Mhaoil Chaluim was born in 1074, a son of King Malcolm III of Scotland and the brother of Alexander and David. He claimed the kingship in 1095 after the murder of his half-brother Duncan II of Scotland, opposing his uncle Donald III of Scotland. He received limited aid from Norman England, but, as William II of England had been preoccupied with Robert de Mowbray's Northumbrian revolt, Edgar was only able to take Lothian in 1095. In 1097, William II finally sent aid to Edgar, who defeated Donald and his supporters and seized the throne for himself. In 1098, Edgar negotiated a treaty with King Magnus Barefoot of Norway, ceding the Scottish claims on the Hebrides and Kintyre. He died in Edinburgh in 1107 and was succeeded by Alexander.
