Edgar Ross (1861-1914) was a former Pinkerton detective and Bureau of Investigation agent. He first appeared during the hunt for the Van der Linde Gang after the Blackwater Massacre in 1899. He was the right-hand man of Andrew Milton and worked beside him throughout the hunt for Dutch Van der Linde and his cronies. After the death of agent Milton, Ross took over the operation and continued to hunt down the Van der Linde Gang, finally cornering them in their hideout in Beaver Hollow. He failed to secure Van der Linde along with the surviving gang members and continued with his search through later on until 1907. When he finally tracked down John Marston and his family, he kidnapped Abigail and Jack Marston and forced John to work as an associate under the Bureau of Investigation and under the terms that John's family be released when he had captured or killed Javier Escuella and Bill Williamson. He also had a new partner named Archer Fordham whom he mentored from 1907-1911. Ross was later killed by Jack Marston in the San Luis River after a duel.
