Edgar Kalou (1908-1988) was an American businessman and convicted murderer from Los Angeles California. He was the owner of Hartfield's Jewelry Store in Downtown Los Angeles, regularly facing discrimination for being Jewish; particularly from Everett Gage, a shoe store owner and member of the Chamber of Commerce who blocked many of Kalou's business propositions.
Eventually, Kalou's anger boiled over when Gage walked into his store and began insulting him, resulting in Kalou gunning the man down. LAPD patrolmen Cole Phelps and Ralph Dunn would investigate the case ahead of the homicide detectives, ultimately arresting Kalou after a brief chase. Kalou was interrogated by Phelps, eventually cracking and confessing to the murder. Phelps was somewhat sympathetic, suggesting he might be able to use his racial argument to argue second degree murder and avoid the death penalty. Phelps was promoted to traffic, as his interrogation of Kalou greatly impressed Captain James Donnelly. He died in 1988 in prison.
