Edelmiro Julian Farrell

Edelmiro Julian Farrell (12 February 1887-21 October 1980) was President of Argentina from 24 February 1944 to 3 June 1946, succeeding Pedro Pablo Ramirez and preceding Juan Peron.

Biography[]

Edelmiro Julian Farrell was born in Lanus, Argentina in 1887, the grandson of an Irish immigrant from County Longford. He graduated from the Military Academy in 1907 and served in an alpine regiment of the Royal Italian Army of Fascist Italy from 1924 to 1926 before returning home. After the 1943 Argentine coup d'etat, Farrell was promoted to Brigadier-General and Vice-President, and he appointed Juan Peron as his secretary. In 1944, Pedro Pablo Ramirez resigned as President, and Farrell succeeded him. Farrell made Peron his vice-president, and, as Peron grew in popularity, Farrell decided to call elections in 1946. Peron was elected in a landslide, succeeding Farrell. Farrell died in 1980.
