Eddie Bernice Johnson (3 December 1935 – 31 December 2023) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-TX 30) from 3 January 1993 to 3 January 2023, preceding Jasmine Crockett.
Biography[]
Eddie Bernice Johnson was born in Waco, Texas in 1935, and she was the first African-American to serve as the Chief Psychiatric Nurse at the Dallas Veterans Administration Hospital. She entered politics 16 years after being appointed to that position, serving in the State House of Representatives from 1973 to 1977, in the State Senate from 1987 to 1993, and in the US House of Representatives from 1993. She was affiliated with the Progressive Democrats during her service in the US Congress, and she retired in 2023.
