Ed Zhang was a Chinese triad gangster and an officer of the Tokyo-based Saio Triad.
Biography[]
Ed Zhang was born in China, and he became an officer of the Saio Triad before being sent to Tokyo, Japan to aid with his cousin Big Lo's takeover of Kabukicho. Following the 2015 Little Asia fire, he attempted to assassinate Shun Akiyama for his ties to Tojo-kai chairman Daigo Dojima, forcing Akiyama to close Sky Finance and go into hiding. In December 2016, Zhang heard of Kazuma Kiryu's return to Kabukicho, and he and his henchmen followed Kiryu into the sewers and conveniently also found Akiyama. Kiryu and Akiyama teamed up to take down Ed and his henchmen, causing Ed to complain that the fight was unfair, despite having had four triad members backing him. Ed than ran off, and, a few days later, he murdered Shu Tatsukawa for his treason, but not before torturing his girlfriend. Ed's gloating about the murders alienated Koji Masuzoe from the triad, causing Masuzoe to later reveal to his fellow Yomei Alliance yakuza Yuta Usami that he was Big Lo's illegitimate son and the heir to the triad. Before then, however, Kiryu and his Hirose-gumi friends infiltrated Chinatown in search of answers about Tatsukawa's murder. Kiryu defeated Ed in a rematch of their first fight, and Ed revealed that Tatsukawa was a heihaizi, an undocumented second-born Chinese child who was smuggled to Japan. Ed fought Kiryu a third time during the latter's rescue of Yuta and Big Lo from the burning Saio headquarters, and Kiryu advised a defeated Ed to flee the building lest he burn with it.
