Edwin Mah "Ed" Lee (5 May 1952-12 December 2017) was the Mayor of San Francisco (D) from 11 January 2011 to 12 December 2017, succeeding Gavin Newsom and preceding London Breed. He was the first Asian-American mayor of San Francisco.
Biography[]
Edwin Mah Lee was born in Seattle, Washington on 5 May 1952, and he worked as an attorney after graduating from Bowdoin College and the UC Berkeley School of Law. In 2000, he was appointed City Administrator of San Francisco, serving until 2011, when the Board of Supervisors appointed Lee to succeed Gavin Newsom as Mayor when Newsom became Lieutenant Governor of California. Lee revitalized the Mid-Market area by providing tax breaks to companies moving into the area, and he also funded more affordable housing projects and increased the minimum wage. Lee died of a heart attack while shopping at a local Safeway on 12 December 2017, and London Breed succeeded him.
