Ecumenical Patriarch Ignatios (797-23 October 877) was the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople from 847 to 858 (succeeding Ecumenical Patriarch Methodios and preceding Ecumenical Patriarch Photios) and from 867 to 877 (succeeding and preceding Photios).
Biography[]
Ignatios was the son of Michael I of Byzantium, but after his father's downfall in 813 he was tonsured and castrated. He became a priest, and in 847 he was made the Patriarch of Constantinople. He reigned until 858, when Michael III of Byzantium overthrew him, but in 867 Basil I of Byzantium overthrew his successor and reinstated Ignatios. Ignatios died in 877, and Ecumenical Patriarch Photios succeeded him again.
