Eckington

Eckington is a neighborhood of Washington DC, located less than one mile southeast of Howard University and exactly one mile north of the US Capitol. The land was originally used for the country home of Mayor Joseph Gales, who named it after his hometown in Derbyshire, England. The house was used as a Union field hospital during the American Civil War. In 1887, Eckington was bought by George Truesdell and developed into a residential area, being wired for electricity in 1889.
