Ecgwyn of Northumbria

Ecgwyn of Northumbria (828-) was the Queen of Northumbria from 863 to 867, and was the wife of King Aella of Northumbria.

Biography[]

Ecgwyn of Northumbria was born in 828 to a lowborn Christian family of Anglo-Saxons. She married into the royal House of Northumbria by wedding King Aella of Northumbria. The two of them were tyrants, with King Aella deposing his predecessor and executing the Viking king Ragnarr Lodbrok in a vicious way; he threw him into a pit of snakes. When Ragnarr died, his sons led the "Great Heathen Army" in an invasion of England, killing Aella and destroying Northumbria and East Anglia.
