East Woods

The East Woods is a patch of woodland on the Antietam National Battlefield, located near Sharpsburg, Maryland. On the evening of 16 September 1862, Union troops from Joseph Hooker's I Corps and Confederate troops from Stonewall Jackson's division skirmished in the East Woods. The next day, during the Battle of Antietam, control of the East Woods changed several times, and Union general Joseph K. Mansfield was killed by a rebel sharpshooter, while 1,100 of divisional commander Alexander Lawton's 2,500 Confederate soldiers engaged in the East Woods were lost.
