East London is the sub-region of London located east of the ancient City of London and north of the River Thames, including the boroughs of Barking and Dagenham, Hackney, Havering, Newham, Redbridge, Tower Hamlets, and Waltham Forest. East London grew out of its core, the East End, which had, in turn, originated during medieval London's growth beyond its old city walls and along the Bishopsgate and Aldgate roads. Even after the East End was urbanized, East London continued to expand east of the Lea and into Essex due to the growth of the dock and shipbuilding industries. The waterfront industries declined during the 20th centuries, but East London experienced regeneration due to gentrification and the redevelopment of Stratford for the 2012 Summer Olympics. In 2001, East London had a population of 1,512,000 people.
