The East Indies are a group of islands in northern Oceania and southern Asia, including Indonesia, Brunei, and Timor Leste. The islands were inhabited by many sultanates of mixed Islamic and Asian cultures, and were explored first by the Dutch, and later by British and Spanish. Even the Japanese traded with the people.
