East Engle

East Engle was a Viking kingdom in southeastern England which existed from 869 to 918, with Dommoc serving as its capital. The Great Heathen Army conquered East Anglia in 869, killing King Edmund of East Anglia and annexing East Engle to Jorvik. In 871, Guthrum became King of East Engle, and he warred against King Alfred the Great of Wessex, nearly overrunning the country in 878 before being defeated at the Battle of Edington and being forced to abandon Wessex and, in 886, partition occupied Mercia with the West Saxons. In 917, King Edward the Elder of Wessex defeated King Guthrum II of East Engle at the Battle of Tempsford and conquered the whole of East Engle and southeastern Mercia, bringing the former kingdom of East Anglia under West Saxon rule.
