East Anglia

East Anglia is a region of southeastern England which was once an Anglo-Saxon kingdom from the 6th century AD to 869, with Rendlesham serving as its capital. The Angles settled in present-day Norfolk and Suffolk, and the Wuffingas ruled the kingdom in the 7th and 8th centuries, adopting Christianity in 604. In 794, East Anglia was conquered by Mercia, but it regained its independence after a rebellion in 825. In 865, during the Viking invasions of England, East Anglia was invaded by the Great Heathen Army, which defeated and killed King Edmund of East Anglia and conquered the kingdom. Guthrum later established the Viking kingdom of East Engle in its stead.
