Earl Snell

Earl Wilcox Snell (11 July 1895-28 October 1947) was the Republican Governor of Oregon from 11 January 1943 to 28 October 1947, succeeding Charles A. Sprague and preceding John Hubert Hall.

Biography[]

Earl Wilcox Snell was born in Olex, Oregon in 1895, and he was raised in Arlington, where he became a partner in an automobile dealership. Snell served in the US Army during World War I before settling in Condon and becoming a rancher and banker. Snell served in the State House from 1926 to 1934, as Secretary of State from 1935 to 1943, and as Governor from 1943 until his death in a plane crash in 1947. Snell supported conservationism, public works projects, and the New Deal during his tenure.
