
Earl Aelfwald of Westmorland (born 833) was the Earl of Westmorland under King Aella of Northumbria.
Biography[]
Aelfwald of Westmorland was born in 833, and was from the House of Dodington. He became the Earl of Westmorland, and as a vassal of King Aella of Northumbria, gave the rights to the succession to his liege. When the "Great Heathen Army" under Halfdan Whiteshirt of Jorvik landed in England in 867 to avenge the death of his father Ragnarr Lodbrok, Aelfwald, Wulfstan of Kelso, and Earl Oswine of Lancaster took command of an army of 5,326 Northumbrian troops and resisted the Vikings at the Battle of Durham. The battle was a victory for the brave Anglo-Saxons against the Viking menace.
