Ealdred of York

Ealdred of York (1000-11 September 1069) was Archbishop of York from 25 December 1060 to 11 September 1069, succeeding Cynesige and preceding Thomas of Bayeux.

Biography[]

Ealdred was born in Devon to a wealthy family, and he became a Roman Catholic monk at Winchester before becoming Abbot of Tavistock Abbey in 1027. He became Bishop of Worcester in 1046, and he also served as a diplomat and military leader under King Edward the Confessor. In 1058, he became the first English bishop to undertake a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, and, while administering the Diocese of Hereford, he was twice defeated by Welsh raiders before making peace with Gruffydd ap Llywelyn. He went on to serve as Archbishop of York from 1060 to 1069, crowning both King Harold Godwinson and King William the Conqueror. He died in 1069.
