Eadred of Eoferwic

Eadred (835-) was a general of the Danish kingdom of Northymbre during the late 9th century. Of Northumbrian Anglo-Saxon heritage, he became King Guthred's most trusted general, commanding Northymbre's southern army in Eoferwic (York) while Guthred's northern army defended the border with Saxon-ruled Northumbria. In this position, Eadred defeated an invasion by Westmoringas at the 878 Battle of Hripum before invading Lancashire and Cumbria and conquering the remote regions of Northern England which still resisted the imposition of Danish rule.
