The Dzungars were a confederation of Oirats that emerged in the early 17th century to oppose Altan Khan of the Khalkha and the Mongols. The Dzungars formed the Dzungar Khanate, which existed from 1634 to 1758, when the Qing dynasty and Russian Empire conquered the khanate. In 2010, 15,520 people claimed Dzungar (Ooled) ancestry in Mongolia, and Kalmyks claimed descent from the Dzungars.
